What is breathwork?
The practice of mindful, controlled breathing, also known as breathwork, is a powerful practice to boost vitality, support healing from chronic stress, disease, and trauma, and support your natural state of well-being. In general terms, “breathwork” can also describe various breath exercises, and is a method to support the exploration of alternate states of consciousness.
The basic idea of breathwork is to release toxins and stress when you breathe out and nourish your mind and body when you breathe in.
While breathwork seems to be trendy right now, it’s not new. People have been practicing breathwork for thousands of years, and it has roots in yoga practice. Breathwork is both an art and a science which uses the power of the breath (through prana or life force energy) to support balance, rejuvenation and well-being. It is a unique modality originating from the Hindu practice of pranayama (Sanskrit for “breath control”). Rooted in Eastern and Western philosophies, ancient practices, and cutting-edge science, breathwork offers a transformative journey towards self-discovery, healing, and personal growth.
Why do it?
We live in a world full of trauma—social, familial, religious, and generational. People are contracted, filled with tension that can be carried throughout their lifetimes, and even passed on through a particular race or religion.
The breath is a reflection of our physical and emotional state. Observing the breath helps us tune into the current state of our body and mind. Your breath is also one of the safest, fastest and powerful tools you have to release tension, “clean out” your tissues, relieve your mind, and reset your energy.
For centuries, sages and healers from across world culture have also recognized a direct link between how you breathe and states of higher psychological wellness and spiritual awareness.
There is also substantial scientific research supporting the benefits of breathwork for greater physical, mental and emotional well-being and performance.
What are the benefits?
Modulating the breath is known to impact our emotional and physical states, but that’s not all. Changing how we breathe changes how our nervous system functions. Deep understanding of the breath has been shown to both change the quality of our lives and impact the way our subconscious and conscious minds work together.
Breathwork naturally releases emotional and physical pain that honours your capacity to self-heal and experience relief from ailments such as grief, anxiety, addictions, depression, low self-esteem, and/or relationship issues.
Breathwork is something that anyone can do, anywhere in the world—and it has been shown to have immediate, positive impact for those suffering from grief, anxiety, and many other challenges.
About the Integrated Somatic Breathwork program
Embark on a transformative experience of self-discovery and healing. Breathwork sessions will help you experience a greater sense of openness, clarity in decision-making, feel more at peace and connected to your purpose and your spirituality.
Trauma is real. It’s not just an idea, or a feeling of upset. Trauma is a physical reaction that becomes part of our bodies, a response to situations large and small. It builds and settles and takes up residence in our tissues over time, expressing itself in our everyday lives, sometimes for years. Trauma is what happens when our systems become overwhelmed, whether by a specific event or life circumstances. It can leave an energetic imprint on the body. If we cannot adequately process and “clear” these experiences, then our lives can become unmanageable. When we energetically charge the body with breath, we create an opening for the deep expression of emotional energy to surface and be released.
Integrative somatic breathwork is used primarily to enhance the process of somatic trauma release, and supports meditation that integrates the work. The combination of breathwork, meditation, bodywork, sound, and emotional expression allows you to release stuck emotions that have accumulated in the body over the course of a lifetime. We trigger the body’s natural “emergency” responses, (even when we’re not being chased by a tiger or threatened at gunpoint). Together, these allow our natural physiological functions to clean out what was left behind by traumatic events.
A 10-week program is recommended to allow the benefits of your practice to go deeper into your physiology. Each hourly session is designed to be fun, relaxing and supportive of personal growth, well-being and life-long learning.
Additional Breathwork Offerings
1:1 Sessions
Private breath sessions are a great opportunity to dive deep into your breath with 1-on-1 support. Sessions are either 60 minutes or 90 minutes in length. We begin the session by sitting together and grounding with a mediation, setting intentions for your session and then talk through what is present for you. We may ask you some specific questions relevant to what’s moving, ask some history, and then explain the breath itself. The second part of the session is the breathwork itself and then there will be space for sharing and integration at the end.
Sessions are $150.00 for 60 mins or $175.00 for 90 mins.
“Breathwork in Pairs” Package
These sessions are tailored for adult pairs (for e.g. two partners, two friends, two siblings, mother-daughter…) seeking an opportunity to explore a deeper connection in relationship.
Sessions are designed to rejuvenate and strengthen your connection.
