“Food is our common ground, a universal experience.”

– James Beard

What is culinary therapy?

Culinary therapy is defined as “the therapeutic technique which uses culinary arts, cooking, gastronomy, and an individual’s personal, cultural, and familial relationship with food to address the emotional and psychological problems faced by individuals, families, and groups.”

There are so many health benefits, life lessons and skills that emanate from creating wholesome, delicious food, from problem-solving, time management, and communication to connection to self, community, culture, and tradition. Especially when paired with mindful eating, cooking builds relationships that encourage trust and intimacy, strengthen bonds, promotes feelings of belonging and acceptance. It can even be an act of self-care.

Cooking can indeed be a form of meditation, and like any other mindfulness practice, culinary therapy is about living in the present moment, giving it your full mental and physical attention and loosing yourself in the process.
